Atari Announces New RollerCoaster Tycoon for iOS and PC

It has been hinted at for awhile now, but we finally have confirmation that a new RollerCoaster Tycoon game is on the way… in the form of a $2.99 mobile app. Judging by the announcement trailer’s ratio of nearly 6500 dislikes to 215 likes, it doesn’t seem like this new direction for the franchise is a popular decision.

Since the initial announcement, Atari has explained that there will also be a “PC experience,” in addition to the mobile game. Whether there will be a full PC release or just a Facebook version of the mobile game remains to be seen. However, the trailer does imply Facebook integration, so things aren’t looking good for diehard fans of the series.

The grumpy old miser in me is really hoping that a full PC game is coming. I love the series, but I’m not a big fan of mobile games. Still, the bright-eyed progressive in me can see this being the next logical step for the franchise. As long as it’s not loaded with micro-transactions (which, let’s face it, it probably will be), maybe Atari can turn around the PR in their favor. Of course, just making a full PC game would probably be a better solution.

While I wait for clarity, I think I’ll download the originals and give them a spin. It’s been awhile since I’ve sent hundreds of unsuspecting fun-lovers careening off an unfinished roller coaster track in the name of capitalism. What do you think about RCT going mobile?
