“And lo, on the eighth day Stan Lee and Walt Disney combined their forces to create the Chosen One, who would deliver us all from darkness.”
The above quote was my highly exaggerated response to seeing the official trailer for Disney and Marvel’s first animated collaboration, “Big Hero 6.” Adapted from the comic series of the same name, the film will follow young Hiro Hamada and his robotic pal Baymax as they battle the Kabuki-faced Yokai to save the city of San Fransokyo.
Coming from the creators of Wreck-It-Ralph and Frozen, I think we can expect the great attention to detail of the former with the thematic storytelling of the latter. Add in a heaping dose of kickass battle and chase sequences and it looks like we’ve got a recipe for something wonderful… Really makes me wish I was actually more familiar with the source material!
If nothing else, it looks colorful, fun, and more than a little smart in its blending of US and Japanese aesthetic values. As far as I know, this looks like the first western mainstream CGI film converting the 2D anime style to 3D, which is pretty cool on its own.
Big Hero 6 releases on November 7, 2014.
