When Blizzard confirmed they would honor the petition to add a non-playable tribute character to World of Warcraft in memory of our dearly departed Robin Williams, I was left in a puddle of tears. Robin Williams was a huge influence on my life growing up. In a sense, he could be considered the father I never had growing up; he was always looking out for me in his many cinematic forms and always there to reassure me that it was going to be okay.
World of Warcraft was another major player in my in transitional period from teenager to young adult. Whenever the world had had me down, I found solace in knowing there was another world I could travel to where I’d matter a hell of a lot more than in this one.
Well, that’s enough sappy emotional baggage from me.
Today, data-mined assets from the beta of the forthcoming World of Warcraft expansion, Warlords of Draenor, have revealed the in-game character model that’s going to channel its inner Robin Williams. Titled “Robin The Entertainer”, Williams’ in-game incarnation is a genie that appears to take various forms.
Two of such forms appear to be male and female humans, which is more than likely a reference to Mrs. Doubtfire. Of course, it’s worth noting that all of these character models have been in the game for some time now. They very well could be placeholders, but the important thing to take away from all of this is that the main genie was named Robin The Entertainer, confirming the groundwork has been paved for the tribute to appear in-game. Considering the human models are wearing their pre-Draenor skins, I think it’s more than likely they will transform before the character is officially implemented in the game.
Regardless, it’s nice of Blizzard to honor such an incredible man who has touched the loves of countless others. Thank you, Blizzard, for giving me the chance to never say goodbye.
