Gabe Newell Explains Half-Life 3 Delay

Valve co-founder Gabe Newell has said that the reason Valve isn’t producing Half-Life sequels like no tomorrow is that they want to be a company known for multiplayer games.

“When we started out, we were a single-player video game company that could have been really successful just doing Half-Life sequel after Half-Life sequel,” Newell said in his recent interview with The Washington Post.

He noted that upon looking back, games like DOTA 2 and Team Fortress 2 have both been decent titles, as well as their Steam platform, a massive success with about 65 million users.

He also spoke about the company’s setup when talking about vacations and sick days. “We don’t track vacation time or sick time,” Newell said. “We just tell people we trust you to make all of these other decisions, of course we are going to trust you to manage your own time. It’s actually a pretty minor issue in terms of how much time people actually spend on vacation or sick leave.”

However, for all you out there who are highly anticipating Half-Life 3, Newell did not say anything about a discontinuation of the series, and has only said the series is going through some “twists and turns”.
