Little Mac Announced for Super Smash Bros. on Wii U and 3DS

Little Mac Super Smash Bros

In an announcement that most of us will brush off as “Duh, why didn’t they do this two games ago,” Nintendo revealed in the latest Nintendo Direct that Little Mac of Punch-Out! fame will finally be a playable character in the upcoming Super Smash Bros. game for Wii U and 3DS.

Little Mac appeared in Brawl as an Assist Trophy, but he has finally (and quite logically) been added to the main roster. This brings the total character count up to 23, five of which are new to the series. Brawl, by comparison, had 35 characters, including 14 newcomers. Will the new game try to match that  size? Possibly—though the developers have stated that they want to keep the roster smaller this time around.

Mac looks like he controls about how you’d expect him to. He has fast jabs, uppercuts, dashes, charge punches, counters, and what looks to be some sort of instant KO punch. It seems like he’s going to be a good character to dominate the ground game with quick speed and heavy hits, but he’ll probably have poor aerial techniques to balance that out.

I’m optimistic about the new Super Smash Bros. game, because it really seems like each character is being reimagined to have lots of fun tools and techniques. Even King Dedede, the object of my loathing in Brawl, appears to be more usable this time around. They also got rid of random tripping, so that alone earns my hope.

Personally, I’m still hoping that the campaign to get Reggie Fils-Aime in the game pulls through. Even if he plays like crap, I’d choose him every time. More realistically, I’d like to see Chibi-Robo—he’s practically got a moveset built in already. There would be some weird scaling involved, but nevertheless, I think it would be interesting. What characters would you like to see in the new Smash Bros?
