Capcom has released the first described gameplay trailer of their remake of the Gamecube remake of the original Resident Evil. Whether or not this is the first step to bringing the franchise back to its roots unlike the absolutely terrible Resident Evil 6 is yet to be seen, but this is certainly a better looking version of the still good looking Resident Evil remake, so there’s that.
I’m a bit torn about this. Remaking a remake seems nothing short of dumb. I get cleaning up the visuals slightly to make a Gamecube game presentable on the modern consoles, but Capcom is making a much bigger deal out of this remake than it deserves or needs.
In spite of that, the original Resident Evil holds a very special place in my heart. While Resident Evil 2 is arguably a better game in almost every regard, it didn’t scare the shit out of me like the original did. I had several sleepless nights due to the wonderfully crafted atmosphere of the mansion on the outskirts of Raccoon City. It could be fun to revisit it, not for the price of a full game, but $20ish sounds like a decent price for something with cleaned up visuals and alternate options like this package.
What this gameplay trailer doesn’t show is the control scheme that reworks RE1 into the much more palatable control scheme of RE4. Whether or not that will completely destroy the tension and challenge is the real question of this remake. It could make revisiting this classic much easier for almost everyone or it could be the worst thing done to the franchise after RE6. Only time will tell.
