Shovel Knight is a side-scrolling plat-former where you control a medieval knight with a shovel instead of a sword. The game is very reminiscent of old-school 8-Bit NES and SEGA games, but much more polished and tighter.
I was particularly impressed with the graphics; if I hadn’t known better, I would have thought I travelled back to 1988. It truly is heart-warming to see Yacht Club Games not pulling any punches when it comes to the 8-bit feel; they didn’t skimp on the sprites and did an excellent job with the animations and vibrant colors.
Another aspect of the game that impressed me were the simple controls. It really wouldn’t feel weird to be holding an NES controller while playing the game.
My only concern about the final product is that I hope the game is challenging; the demo was a little easy, but I’m sure it was a little easy because it was a demo and they wanted people to enjoy the level all the way to the end.
I am looking forward to Shovel Knight and cannot wait to play and explore more of its world.
