Last week I chose my Top Ten Video Game Villains, so I’ve also decided to do a list of my top ten heroes and protagonists in video games of all time. A hero is what everyone in the world aspires to be and video games give everyday people the opportunity to engage in adventures beyond their average day life.
10. Chun-Li (Street Fighter Series)
One of the first female characters to appear in a 1 on 1 fighting game and a character who is a huge part of the Street fighter franchise, Chun-Li is one of the most popular known heroines to video games, alongside characters such as Lara Croft from Tomb raider. She is known for her multiple fast attacks with her super strength thighs. She has great devotion for her father and after his death she swears vengeance. There was a Street fighter sequel based on Chun-Li’s story and she has also appeared in comics and manga. Her latest appearance is in the recently released film Wreck-it-Ralph.
9. Corvo Attano (Dishonored)
Dishonored is the stealth steampunk-esk game with Bioshock/Deus Ex feel. It’s short game, but one of the best stealth games I’ve played yet. Corvo quickly became the newest addition to my family of hero’s. His and Emily’s (the empress-to-be) father-daughter-like relationship was enough for him to win me over. The amount of effort he went through to save Emily and restore peace to the city of Dunwall, which is especially tricky if you were trying to go for the no kill/no detection approach, which I was going for, minus two accidental kills. But then again, it was fun to go on murderous rampage slicing people up, then going back to the last save and continue being the kindest assassin ever, again.
8. Nathan Drake (Uncharted Series)
One of the best and attractive video game characters ever, and this isn’t just from a females perspective, a lot of guys I know also have a ‘man crush’ on him. The adventurer is a relatable character to a lot of players because he is just trying to do the best he can, failing sometimes, but never giving up, and ageing and maturing throughout. Uncharted has some of the most beautiful cinematic moments of all time. I remember playing Uncharted 2: Among Thieves and it was the first game I just had to stop and look around at how amazing the graphics were.
7. Sora (Kingdom Hearts Series)
The Playstation 2 is the console that ran the majority of my favourite games, Kingdom hearts being one of them. Sora is innocent and quite naive. He confuses love with friendship, well in the case of Kairi, but his heart is always in the right place, and he is determined to save his friends no matter how dangerous the journey can be. Along with his fabulous sidekicks Donald and Goofy, of course. Another reason to love this game is the combination of Disney and Final Fantasy characters! People may shun the idea but I loved it. My only complaint about this game is that Donald Duck shouldn’t be able to speak in serious situations; it just makes me laugh instead of taking the scene seriously!
6. Dovahkiin (The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim)
Dovahkiin is the hero of the hugely successful game Skyrim that sold over seven million copies over a week. It kicks of with him discovering that he is Dragonborn, meaning that he is one of the only people whom can actually defeat dragons by using shouts and sheer strength then afterwards absorbing their souls. Awesome. He’s also a hero due to helping multiple people by enduring a never ending list of side quests. This is a struggle for me because I usually like to do all the side quests possible in a game before continuing on to the main quest, obviously I couldn’t as it is impossible. I also give props for being able to speak the language of the dragons; me and my friends tried to learn and memorize shouts but failed miserably. Maybe I should realize that I’m not actually dragon born –Sigh.
On the next page we have the top five! Will your favorite video game heroes make the list?
